HYPOTHETICAL RANKS

Hypothetical U.S. Army Enlisted Ranks

Dealing primarily with contemporary and historical Earth nations. (Science-fiction oriented rank systems, such as Star Trek, Starship Troopers, etc.), should be placed in FICTIVE Rank Insignia.

Hypothetical U.S. Army Enlisted Ranks

Hi Everyone!

Just some hypothetical ranks (added to the real ones), as part of the background for a novel I'd like to write.

Rank Titles

Unread postby Chuck Anderson » Mon Mar 12, 2007 4:37 am

Hi!

The rank titles didn't come through very clear, so I'll list them here:

E-1 Private
E-2 Private
E-3 PFC
E-4 Cpl. & Spec.4
E-5 Sgt., 1st Sgt & Spec.5
E-6 SSgt., 1st Sgt & Spec.6
E-7 SFC, 1st Sgt. & Spec.7
E-8 MSgt., 1st Sgt & Spec.8
E-9 SGM, Spec.9, Staff 1st Sgt., Staff SGM, Command SGM & SMA

This is, as I said, just for a work of fiction.
I've also done other things (I'll show the illustrations later) such as:
Bring back USAF Warrant Officers (They'll be WO1 to CWO-5)
Reinstituting WO-1 for the USN and USCG
And many other insignia changes.

Oh, God! The Brits did just peachy with 6 or 7 NCO ranks while having an Army that streched across the whole planet. Whyever must the US have a dozen or more enlisted ranks and keep adding to them?

Sounds good all except way too many First Sergeants. There should only be one 1SG in a company. It would be counter to the position to have more than one.....like having more than one Commander to a unit or mother to a family.

In fiction, you can MAKE it possible!

Unread postby Chuck Anderson » Mon Mar 12, 2007 6:05 pm

Hi Everyone!

Miklos and Ryan, your points are well taken! However one nice thing about fiction is that you can find a way, you can contrive a situation to MAKE this work!

These First Sergeant ranks could be as much about position or career field rather than just rank. In this situation a First Sergeant needn't be restricted just to the E-8 pay grade, but could move up in rank while still being a First Sergeant.
First Sergeants from E-5 to E-7 could handle units up to a certain size, with E-8 and E-9 having larger units and greater resposibilities.

Besides, like other hypothetical or fictional ranks presented in this Forum, I just think that they look neat! Along with that, you can make-up or contrive a reason for their existence!

Sometimes I think that our Forum could use a NEW category (besides just Fictive ranks!)
We could call it something like Hypothetical Ranks or What-If Ranks.

FICTIVE RANKS: (Having fun with Sci-fi/Fantasy)
Fictive Ranks could be used for things like Star Trek, Star Wars, Dune, etc.

HYPOTHETICAL RANKS: (Having fun with the REAL world)
Hypothetical Ranks could be used for modifications that Forum members make to the ranks of REAL NATIONS of the world. For example, a Forum member could show us his or her ideas for changes or modifications to the rank insignia of the British Army.
We can get a little creative, and have creative explanations to go with our creative rank insignia ideas!
This could fit nicely into any fiction our Forum members may care to create.

Battlefield 2 also has their own rank system based on the US Marine Corps

http://www.online-gaming-forums.com/BF2 ... adges.html

For some reason though, the above link only has up to 2nd Lieutenant when (I believe) you can go up to full general in the game provided you have no life and play for whole days on end.

once i thought the US Army put one-chevron < for their privates, two-chevrons << for corporals, and three-chevrons <<< for sergeants, with arch for each grades within consistently. if that's so, then :
E1 Private : <
E2 Private first class : <)

E3 Lance corporal : <<
E4 Corporal : <<)

E5 Sergeant : <<<
E6 Staff sergeant : <<<)
E7 Sergeant first class : <<<))
E8 Master sergeant : <<<))) and,
E9 Sergeant Major : <<<)))).
