Hi Chris:
I thought that I would start a new thread on this topic in my reply to your post under RCMP corrections.
We do have Sheriffs in Canada, but they are more in line with the British system than the US. They are not police officers but court officers. They are similar to US court bailiffs. (In Canada bailiffs are different; they carry out court actions such as seizing property by legal writ)
Sheriffs serve subpoenas to witnesses who are to appear in criminal cases, summon and assemble jury panels, maintain security and order in courts, and escort prisoners. Senior Sheriff’s also act as Bailiff’s for the Crown (which means they can seize property.)
The Basic hierarchy in the Province of Manitoba, Canada is:
Chief Sheriff
Sheriff 3
Sheriff 2
Sheriff 1
Sheriff’s Officer 4
Sheriff’s Officer 3
Sheriff’s Officer 2
Sheriff’s Officer 1
