Unread postby dcfowler » Sat Mar 22, 2014 9:42 am

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) appointed only the second vice admiral in its history on Jan 1, 2014.

Vice Admiral Michael S. Devany was appointed as the Deputy Undersecretary of Commerce for Operations on that date.

The only previous vice admiral in the service was VADM Henry A. Karo, who held that rank as the deputy administrator of the US Environmental Science Services Administration (NOAA's predecessor agency) from 1965 to 1967.

The NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps is on of seven federal uniformed services in the United States (Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Public Health Service, NOAA).
