South African Rep. Transvaal Staatsartillerie (1882 - 1901)

Unread postby ChrisWI » Tue Apr 01, 2008 7:19 pm

At the below link can be found officer's rank insignia for the Transvaal Staatsartillerie/Transvaal State Artillery which basically made up the permanent military force of the 2nd South African Republic until it was re-annexed into the British Empire following the end of the Boer War. Unfortunately I cant seem to find any information on other ranks (NCOs and enlisted) rank insignia.

I could be wrong here but:

1 - Commandant General collar rank insignia
2 - Commandant General cuff rank insignia
3 - Kolonel/Colonel
4 - Luitenant Kolonel/Lieutenant Colonel
5 - Major
6 - Kaptein/Captain
7 - Luitenant/Lieutenant
8 - Tweede Luitenant/Second Lieutenant

I would imagine that cuff rank insignia for 2nd Lt. - Colonel followed a similar pattern as the rank insignia for Cmdt General.

ZAR Staatsartillerie - other ranks insignia

Unread postby milhistry » Fri Dec 05, 2008 1:03 am

I think (from memory) the NCO ranks were:

Adjudant-onder-offizier (Warrant Officer) - button on collar

Opperwachtmeester (i.e. Sergeant-Major) - 4 chevron
Wachtmeester (i.e. Sergeant) - 3 chevron
Korporaal (i.e. Corporal/Bombadier) - 2 chevron
Onderkorporaal (ie. 2nd or Lance Corporal or Lance bombadier) - 1 chevron
Artilleris / Manschap (Gunner / Private) - no insignia

Hello!

I can't see this image!
Could you show Transvaal officer's rank insignia in a different way or to write the text how they look?

I think this is the new website.

I never saw the old one, so I don't know if the pictures are the same. That being said, the wayback machine-archived page appears to be the same, just lacking pictures.

Thank you very much!

On some reconstruction I saw five-pointed stars.
Such option too was applied by Transvaal army?

No problem. I know it can be difficult, and annoying, not being able to find what you're looking for.
I don't know much about SA history, but here is a site with various insignia from all over the world. I don't know if it will help, but I figure it's better than nothing.

Here's another page from the site. Hope it helps.

We have drawing of officer's rank insignia and text descriptions of NCO's rank insignia:

Image

Adjudant-onder-offizier (Warrant Officer) - button on collar

Opperwachtmeester (i.e. Sergeant-Major) - 4 chevron
Wachtmeester (i.e. Sergeant) - 3 chevron
Korporaal (i.e. Corporal/Bombadier) - 2 chevron
Onderkorporaal (ie. 2nd or Lance Corporal or Lance bombadier) - 1 chevron
Artilleris / Manschap (Gunner / Private) - no insignia

Maybe we will ask artists to draw insignia for the Transvaal Staatsartillerie and administrators to lay out them on site?

Are the collar flaming grenades the same worn by the Granadiers European units?

According to materials of website "The South African Military History Society" the collar flaming grenades is insignia of Johannesburg Fortress Artillery Corps.

Similar insignia in the different countries use various military units.

P.S.
I'm a little confused...
Officers Transvaal Staatsartillerie wore silver or gold stars?
