And, as people who always respect their traditions, they followed the traditional system for their officers' rank insignias, when the officer's category (field, staff and general) was indicated with rings/stripes (one, two and three respectively), and ranks within these categories - with stars (one for 2nd Lt, Major and Major General, two for 1st Lt, Lt Colonel and Lt General, three for Captain, Colonel and General).
A very valuable information.
Btw, I like the avatar of the author of this post - the Soviet (and now Russian) actor Vyacheslav Tikhonov in his role as an SS Standartenfuhrer Stierlitz (the Soviet spy Colonel Isayev) smilies-23
