Australian Sheriffs

Unread postby ChrisWI » Sat Jun 05, 2004 2:05 pm

Belive it or not, Australia has sherifs. They are organzied on a state level (ex. New South Wales Sheriff's Office), they not full police officers though and mostly do:

- Administer the Sheriff's Office
- Serve Summonses and enforcement orders, warrants and orders of the Supreme, District and Local Courts, and other tribunals and courts
serve and enforce orders within the borders of a state on behalf of Commonwealth courts, including the High Court, Federal Court and the Family Court of Australia;
- Arrange security for the Supreme Court, District Court, certain Local Courts and a range of tribunals
- And administer the jury system

NSW Sheriff's Office

In New South Wales, the Sheriff's Office has the following ranks which I found on another website:

- Sheriff
- Deputy Sheriff
- Sheriff's Officer

Imageshoulder patch, meaning they might have some sort of rank insignia as well

South Australia Sheriff's Office
http://www.courts.sa.gov.au/sheriff/content.html - I emailed them asking about rank insignia.

I would say that the role of a sheriff in Australia is pretty much the same as that of a sheriff in a big city in the US. With authority limited to courts, jails, warrants, etc. Dont expect an Australian sheriff's officer to pull you over for speeding in other words. Also, the rank of deputy sheriff in Australia seems to be similar to the rank of Chief Deputy Sheriff or Undersheriff in a US sheriff's office, what we call a deputy sheriff in our rank system here is called a sheriff's officer there.

Here is the rank insignia used by the South Australia Sheriff's Office:

Sheriff - no rank insignia

Deputy Sheriff - no rank insignia

Senior Sheriff's Officer - as above, but white shirt

Here is the text of the email response I got: "Dear Chris, Thank you for your email regarding rank insignia used by this Office. Our Sheriff’s Officers are uniformed in blue trousers, white shirt and carry no rank insignia. The Senior Sheriff’s Officer carries a rank insignia of a blue epaulet with a single silver bar attached. All Officers carry visible ID and wear Sheriff’s Office insignia on the arms of their uniform. - Vincent Dalton Manager – Regional, Sheriff's Office of South Australia"

Thanks for checking for me, Chris.

I've found some more information about the NSW Sheriff if anyone's interested. From what I've come up with, the NSW Sheriff seem to use a ranking system similar to that of the NSW Police for the ranks between Sheriff's Officer and Deputy Sheriff/Sheriff. Take a look at the following web page:

In NSW, the ranking system can be found in the hyperlink:
"Crown Employees (Sheriff's Officers) Award"

The relevant ranks are:

Chief Inspector
Inspector
Sergeant
Sheriff’s officer
Probationary Sheriffs officer

ps: that website is great if you are looking for ranks or positions of many NSW government employees.
