Up until 1989 the Naval Police of the Royal Australian Navy existed as a auxiliary force with its own unique rank structure and insignia. The insignia for all ranks was in silver instead of the gold used for other members of the RAN. The insignia on the dress uniform between 1973 and 1989 was as follows
Constable - two chevrons
Senior Constable - two chevrons surmounted by a metal crown
Sergeant - three chevrons surmounted by a metal crown
Warrant Officer - Australian crest
Sub Inspector - One full row of siver lace with navy pattern executive curl in same style as RAN Sub-Lieutenant
Inspector - Two full rows of silver lace with same style as RAN Lieutenant
Chief Inspector - Two and a half rows of silver lace in same style as RAN Lieutenant Commander
Superintendant - Three rows of silver lace in same style as RAN Commander.
There was provision for a Chief Superintendant but to my knowledge no appointment was ever made.
The use of the Police style rank structure was abandoned in late 1989. The force had originally been called the Naval Dockyard Police.
