Serbia/Srpska Rank Insignia

Serbia is the name of the Republic of Serbia within Yugoslavia and since yestarday within "Serbia-and-Montenegro". Serbia doesn't have its own armed forces, since Defence is a federal matter in Yugoslavia (or now in Serbia-and-Montenegro) but they have an independent police force with some characteristics of a regular army. During the war in Kosovo, the Police of Serbia was the main force engaged in Kosovo from the Yugoslav side. In this site it appears separately but could indeed be put under Yugoslavia.

Srpska refers to a polity within Bosnia and Herzegovina called Republika Srpska or the Serb Republic. At its creation in 1992 it was called the Serb Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and afterwards it changed for simply the Serb Republic to show that their ultimate goal was to leave Bosnia and join the Republic of Serbia mentioned above. After the War in Bosnia ended, the Serb Republic or Republika Srpska was made one of the two entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since this country is united only remotely, both entities kept their armed forces independent. In this sense it makes sense to leave it as an independent entry on this site but "legally" it should appear under Bosnia-and-Herzegovina.

Hence the two Serb armies...
