That I understand Thankyou. What I was trying to find out is that someone told me once that you are not awarded medals like other armies, is that true?

Being an ex. military bandmaster myself my guess is that the first one is for a Xylophone musician, a percussionist. Playing the Xylophone requires two mallets in each hand which would be a good match to the symbolism of the badge.

Hello,

About medals : During the introduction of the new "A" dress it has been decided that our army had to be a little bit "more like the others" and to abandonn the "sugus" badges of qualification and introduce ribbons like the other armies. The other point was that more and more military personnel was send abroad and received - even it was not permitted by swiss laws - decoration : all UN missions + NATO missions (Bosnia, Kosovo). But the question remains : What are we going to do with these marks of appreciation / participation to these missions ?

One year or two before the introduction of the new uniform, I saw people who have been UN observer in Georgia or in Croatia and elsewhere wearing on the right side of their "A" dress the ribbon(s) received from the UN and on the left side the "sugus".

Then Switzerland authorized (by referendum) to send not only individuals but also company size units (this fall, the Parliament said yes to the proposal to send bataillon size unit) in such UN or NATO missions. Knowing that these people will be awarded with "participation" medals, the government authorised the wearing of these foreign ribbons and the creation of swiss medals to thanks the people sent abroad :

The basic ribbon is without rosace (six months) and the golden rosace is for long duty.

But - and it is very important - these medals are only worn if they are presented on the field (and the same is true with foreign "participation" medals) and during the ceremony.
After only the ribbon(s) are worn. And the ribbon of those medals are worn after the "normal" swiss ribbons (number of days, good shooter etc).

No "bravery", "commendation" or "achievement" medals exist and military people are still forbidden to accept such medals, crosses, etc. This rule is valid for professionnals and "militia" people.

Hello,

About the ribbons : Three new ribbons are now awarded (I don't like this word, but I haven't found a better one)

Ribbon for "engagement en Suisse / Inlandeinsätze" - Operations in Switzerland.
Second place just after the "days of service" ribbon. But I haven't seen it on any chest till now

Ribbon for participation to NATO "Partnership for Peace - PfP" operations.

Ribbon for long stay abroad (in german : Lange Ausland-Abkommandierung) By example when you are sent to a foreign military academy. I have a photo of a general officer with this ribbon but of poor quality...
