French Navy Enlisted Insignia Question

Unread postby venqax » Fri Jan 22, 2016 9:39 pm

Can someone clarify confusion regarding French Navy enlisted ranks on the Encylopedia? On the Sleeve Insignia chart the rank (rate) of Quartier Maitre, equivalent to Petty Officer 2nd class, is shown between Quartier Maitre 1st class and Maistrancier (?) with the insignia of 1 gold above 3 red stripes.

The Shoulder Insignia chart, however, shows no such rank and I don’t see it on any other sources.

Similarly, on the Sleeve Insignia chart 2 different insignia— 1 vs 2 gold stripes-- are shown but both labeled the same: Second Maitre (sic) PDL, with the first listed as equivalent to Petty Officer 1st class and the second as Chief Petty Officer. Again, the Shoulder Insignia chart does not show the first version (1 stripe) of this rank. Hence, I am confused.

Thanks, that helps. Any idea where the 1 gold and 3 red stripes rank on the site comes from or where it fit into the structure?

regarding the discrepancies

until the mid-70s, second maître was divided into 2 classes:

second maître de 2e classe = 1 gold stripe
second maître de 1re classe = 2 gold stripes

second maître de 2e classe then became the rank used by a Second Maître during the term of his national service (PDL or Pendant Durée Légale) and the 2 stripes were used by a Second Maître who remained in the navy after his national service (ADL or Après Durée Légale).

Now, there used to be a rank of "Quartier-maître de première classe avec plus de 10 ans de service" (quartermaster with more then 10 years seniority) which was abolished at the same time as the Second Maître PDL and ranked just below it but unlike on the page it had only 2 red chevrons below a gold one.

Thus the sleeve ranks page more then likely correspond to a period before the reform of 1997 after which the ranks of Second Maître PDL and Quartier-maître de première classe avec plus de 10 ans de service were abolished and Second Maître ADL was renamed simply Second Maître and kept the 2 stripes. with the QM10's insgnia being mistakenly represented.
