Wikipedia tells me that the Swiss Guard comprises 110 men, the Gendarmerie 130, and the Fire Service 14(!). Why such fully articulated ranks? A 130-man police force in an English-speaking country would have Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant/Inspector, Captain/Chief Inspector/Superintendent. Maybe.

I would assume they simply want to have a theoretical equivalency to their italian counterpart since I assume that's where they recruit.

I wouldn't trust Italian Wikipedia here.

The ranks of the Gendarmeria are:

Ispettore Generale
Vice Ispettore Vicario
Vice Ispettore
Sovrastante Maggiore
Sovrastante
Vice Sovrastante
Assistente
Vice Assistente
Agente Scelto
Agente

With all but the three superior ranks being the equivalent of Italian state police junior ranks, similar to Constable (agente, assistente) and Sergeant (sovrastane) in the UK.

These are the sovrastanes and senior officers as of today:

Sig. Giani Dott. Comm. Domenico, Ispettore Generale
Sig. Bonarelli Dott. Comm. Raoul, Vice Ispettore
Sig. D'Amico Cav. Giuseppe, Sovrastante Maggiore
Sig. Maritan Dott. Cav. Gianfranco, Sovrastante Maggiore
Sig. Biocca Geom. Cav. Egildo, Sovrastante Maggiore
Sig. Perfetti Cav. Antonio, Sovrastante Maggiore
Sig. Scola Cav. Mario, Sovrastante
Sig. Stival Cav. Silvano, Sovrastante
Sig. Della Monaca Cav. Francesco, Sovrastante
Sig. Tirelli Cav. Cesare, Sovrastante
Sig. Ruggiero Cav. Domenico, Sovrastante
Sig. Bracchi Rag. Nunzio, Sovrastante

A chief, a deputy chief, four stations sergeants, and five sergeants, isn't that top heavy.
