Great find!

Eons ago I posted a query in the forum and it was replied to but I can't find the thread, or my notes from it:

In the scheme of French ranks, who wears 1 or 6 stars? These gaps bother me. :)

Second, and less important, was there ever a rank above Colonel that used 3+3 stripes? It's not exactly a gap but it looks like a truncated pattern.

there used to be a one star rank which was a temporary rank for colonels acting as brigade commanders. They were known as "Brigadiers des Armées"

no one has ever worn 6 stars despite some claims that the military commander of Paris wore them, he actually was a général d'armée and so wore 5. More then likely, it is simply to make the marshal insignias stand out more.

not in france but a number of african countries who use the french style of insignias now have the Colonel-Major which is represented by that of a colonel with the addition of an adjudant type bar above:
