Iceland sheriffs?

Unread postby ChrisWI » Sat Dec 10, 2005 4:07 am

I was looking at Kaldi's website and saw him make a mention of Icelandic sheriff's. I did a google search and found some pictures of their vehicles (which are marked) so im assuming they wear uniforms.

Do you know anything of rank insignia? And also what exactly do they do? Im assuming the usual sheriff work (running the jail, courthouse security, prisoner transport, civil process, etc)?

Hi Chris
The Icelandic sherrifs are in fact chiefs of police and they are having two jobs and two uniforms that has been so for many years that the Icelandic police had sherrifs but the rank names for chiefs of police came to use in 1997 (sherrifs have beem for some 200 years ) the uniform for sherrifs is black the rankinsignia is golden ( simular to German general insignia without the branch colour ) the sleeve insignia is what you was looking at on my site collar insignia i am not sure of how looks, insignia of hats are also something i am not sure of how looks but i am trying to get info on these insignias as well as insignia for deputy sherrif

The hystory of Icelandic sherrifs starts at 1262 when Iceland was under authority of the king of Norway, it stated that there are to be persons to keep up the law in Iceland "sýslumenn" in norwegian language (?sysselmann?) in Iceland this is probably higer rank than in Norway, this means that Icelandic sherrifs have been acting as chiefs of police from that time untill today but the history of uniformed police in Iceland dates back some 200 years but i still have no information about the time when sherrifs in Iceland got theyr uniform.
There is not only sherrifs and deputy sherrifs in Iceland that have uniforms the persons working under them so called "hreppstjórar" Norwegian "?lensmann?" have uniform aswell and i am also looking for pictures of that uniform.
So from all this you can see that there is still some searching left for me in completing the rank tabels of Icelandic rank´s and insignia

PS
the insignia referred to abowe (previous post) was the wermacht general sholder insignia but slightly longer and all golden colour.

What do their "regular" uniforms look like?

Is this what their vehicles look like? http://www.syslumenn.is/media/syslumenn ... 23_002.jpg

Well this is the newest look of the cars that the Icelandic police uses.
These cars are also used by the sherrifs when they need to travel, the driver is actually a police officer.
The regular sherrifs uniform is without all insignia exept buttons the hat is the same, usually they are not in unifom exept for black trousers without the thick golden stripe lengthwice on sides, insignia of rank is not on other dresses only formal dress, collar insignia is far as i know only on formal dress.
There is also older version of deputy sherrifs uniform and there they have some insignia on ( at least on formal uniform ).
They are looking to change the unifom so further info will be added later.
I am also trying to get picture of sherrif wearing the formal uniform + taking picture of hat and collar insignia seperatly but sory this will have to be on some later occation.
maybe if the sherrif for this district where i live can e:mail to me picture off him and some other members of the staff to me later ( if im going to ask nicely ) :D :D :D
If he does ill put it on my site.

greetings

Hi
I am now doing some research about the Icelandic sherrifs as far as i know theyr profession dates back to the year 1262 but only as captains from Norway ( kings captains ) they came too Iceland to uphold the law for the first centuryes.
The uniform the sherrifs are using today is probably some uppdated look of the uniform used in the past.
Sherrifs in Iceland are now holding positions in 28 districts.
The insignia seen on my pages is the newest look of the uniform, im now triyng to get pictues of the old uniform ( older uniforms ) the hat itself has as far as i know not been changed for many years.
I have been triyng too search the www. for the history but this has been difficult as i have been seaching Norwegian ( scandinavian ) databases and not found so far.
If anyone finds out something more than i have it will be nice to know.

Note that the other uniformed person/s are from the Icelandic police also wearing formal uniform.

Thanks Luke for this link this is something i was looking for :D :D :D
