In my opinion, they are really ugly.

I've always had my doubts about rank distinctions based solely on some elements being identical across 2 or more ranks save from the size. Even though making the distinction may not be life and death if you confused a "chief of Security" and an "advisor on security to the Directorate", it feels like using even a small difference in design / colour / presentation of the epaulette would be less confusing even if, I'm assuming, the idea was to show some sort of correspondence between the 2 ranks.
