It's nice that they were able to repurpose the old Grossdeutschland cypher.

Regiment Grossdeutschland was founded in 1939. The Reichsbahn uniform regulations were issued in 1935.

Although, of course, the shoulder board in the image could have been created by some "collector" using a Grossdeutschland GD. There must be hundreds, if not thousands, of Grossdeutschland GDs around, while there where only one single official using a silver GD in the Reichsbahn (and that only during the period 1935-40). Reproduction GDs are also sold, both in silver and gold.

In February 1941 new uniform regulations for the Deutsche Reichsbahn were issued: A new type of visor cap, new type of collar patches showing career level, and new rank insignia. For paygrade 6 and below, the old rank insignia was continued but with rosettes instead of pips. Higher pay grades received new rank insignia, also with rosettes. The senior management were not longer to wear Railway uniforms, but civil service uniforms.

In July 1941 new regulations were issued changing the rank insignia from conventional shoulder boards to Passanten (of the same type as US civil war or full-dress shoulder boards).

However those for pay grade 9 and higher were never issued. For lower paygrades they were only issued to a limited extent, meaning that two middle or senior railway officials could have different types of rank insignia.

(Note that the pay grade system was reversed, the lower the number, the higher the grade. I expressed myself awkwardly in the last post For paygrade 6 and below, which should mean higher paygrade = lower rank).
