Help with identification

Unread postby Lt. » Mon Dec 03, 2007 7:05 am

My pal got these two patches in a big lot of US insignia, but has had trouble identifying them. I know that the oval one is background trimming, and I looked at the TIOH site, but couldn't find anything about it.

Number 1 is US Forces Austria, a post-WW2 occupation command that existed through the mid-1950s. The backing oval, I have no idea.

best regards,
Justin

ID Patches

As far as I know Lt's correct about No 1. US Forces Austria Aug 1945 - June 1958 I believe.
Thought the oval may be Vietnam period, but couldn’t find any such item with white/yellow/white combo.
However, the following sites [if you haven’t already visited them] may help.
If they don’t help, at least they could be a useful source of reference for the future.
Be warned, you could spend a great deal of time on them!

Thanks 60bill. smilies-05

I do know about the first two web sites, and have been using the TIOH one for a long time as a point of reference.
The USA Austria is not a current patch and TIOH does not have in on their web site.
As for the background trimming, I found some similar but not identical patches.

Thanks again. The search continues. smilies-05

Hi Lt,
True, I have also found similar but not the same.
Question, could it have been a local [unofficial] manufacture within the unit. I’ve heard of commanders having patches made for morale building?
I noticed that you mentioned the TIOH site, and guessed that you may know of the others.
Just thought I’d add the links for anyone who may not have come across them.
How about emailing vetshome, it may work, give then a challenge to name it,
somebody must have served in that unit.
Daft idea maybe, sorry.
best regards
WF
