Two years later from 01 April 2008, the trial extended throughout JGSDF, with actual adaptation expected in 2011.

There are 7 levels of Sergeant Majors for JGSDF, and they are as follows (note that the appointment badges are worn on the left arm):

1. Sergeant Major of JGSDF (4 golden cheery blossoms)
2. Regional Army Command Sergeant Major (3 golden cherry blossoms)
3. Division Command Sergeant Major (3 silver cherry blossoms)

4. Brigade Command Sergeant Major (2 golden cherry blossoms)
5. Group Command Sergeant Major (2 silver cherry blossoms)

6. Regimental Sergeant Major (1 golden cherry blossom)
7. Command Sergeant Major [Battalion level] (no cherry blossom)
