Sergeant Majors of JGSDF

Unread postby Erwin » Thu Jul 15, 2010 7:58 pm

From 01 April 2006, the Japan Ground Self Defence Force (JGSDF) started experimental trials for implementing the Command Sergeant Major system; this trial covered Middle Army of JGSDF from Company level and above.

Two years later from 01 April 2008, the trial extended throughout JGSDF, with actual adaptation expected in 2011.
According to an article from Stars and Stripes, the main reason for implementation of Command Sergeant Major system is that the JGSDF wanted their senior enlisted ranks to take more responsibilities like the US Army. http://www.stripes.com/news/liaison-off ... es-1.76862

There are 7 levels of Sergeant Majors for JGSDF, and they are as follows (note that the appointment badges are worn on the left arm):

1. Sergeant Major of JGSDF (4 golden cheery blossoms)

2. Regional Army Command Sergeant Major (3 golden cherry blossoms)

3. Division Command Sergeant Major (3 silver cherry blossoms)

4. Brigade Command Sergeant Major (2 golden cherry blossoms)

5. Group Command Sergeant Major (2 silver cherry blossoms)

6. Regimental Sergeant Major (1 golden cherry blossom)

7. Command Sergeant Major [Battalion level] (no cherry blossom)

The Command Sergeant Major appointments are held by Warrant Officers (OR9). The rank badge is on the collar.
