From what I understand, office of sheriff in the United Kingdom is mainly a ceremonial position in the modern era. Most of their functions have been delegated to outside agencies ex. court security is provided by privately hired security guards with the local police force providing court security only for major cases, jails are either run by private contractors or the HM Prison Service in England and Wales, Scottish Prison Service, Northern Ireland Prison Service, etc. I think their only actual function is to serve and enforce court documents for which they have something called Court Enforcement Officers and i believe they are almost always escorted by the local police who make any arrests that are necessary and handle any trouble.

However, in Canada and Australia the Sheriff performs the same functions as a Sheriff would here in the United States except for the running of the prison system. Some Canadian Provincial Sheriff's even have patrol units and handle emergency calls like here in the US!

"High Sheriffs are responsible in the counties of England and Wales for duties conferred by the Crown through Warrant from the Privy Council, including:

* Attendance at Royal visits to the county;
* The well being and protection of Her Majesty's High Court Judges when on Circuit in
the county and attending them in court during legal terms;
* Acting as the Returning Officer for Parliamentary Elections in county
constituencies;
* Responsibilities for the proclamation of the accession of a new Sovereign;
* The maintenance of the loyalty of subjects to the Crown."

"As well as needing to be known by the right people, being the High Sheriff requires you to be fairly wealthy as the High Sheriff "uniform" of velvet breeches, jacket, sword etc can cost several thousand pounds—unless you can get them second hand from a previous sheriff who is the same size."
