I'm getting "Service Unavailable", but if I understand your question the object may be a "brassard", a.k.a. "armlet".

I don't believe that's what it is.
I couldn't find any more pics, but here's a link to a 'rough sketch,' I did.
The thinks I'm talking about are the red things.

They're a cloth that is worn under the armpit, and under the epaulette. I've seen them worn on the left, right, and on both sides.
EDIT:
Right click, select 'View' for a better view.

Here is another image. Unfortunately I have not been able to figure out what its called. I can not see that they are mentioned in the French army uniform regulations of 2005, that are available on the Internet: http://www.formation.terre.defense.gouv ... tenues.pdf

Ah, thank you! I asked this question on another board and was told it's a field recognition scarf, but was not given the name ... I actually was going to mention my success here and ask if anyone could further help, but now there's no need.:)

EDIT:
I was just at that site a few days ago because I found pictures of soldiers of the RPIMA wearing the scarf and being awarded a fourragere.
Oh, the irony!
