Re: Updating Venezuelan ranks

Why should Sargento TĂ©cnico de Primera be translated as Sergeant Major of the Army?

There is only one Sergeant Major of the Army in the US army, being the supreme enlisted adviser to the Chief of Staff of the US Army, an organization with half a million active duty soldiers. How many Sargentos TĂ©cnicos de Primera exists in the Venezuelan army?

Translation of ranks is a tricky question. They don't have to be perfect, but I do not believe you can mix a set of ranks from the NCO corps, with a set of ranks from the WO corps.

Why not these translations?

*Sargento TĂ©cnico de Tercera - Third Warrant Officer
*Sargento TĂ©cnico de Segunda - Second Warrant Officer
*Sargento TĂ©cnico de Primera - First Warrant Officer
*Maestro TĂ©cnico de Tercera - Third Chief Warrant Officer
*Maestro TĂ©cnico de Segunda - Second Chief Warrant Officer
*Maestro TĂ©cnico de Primera - First Chief Warrant Officer
*Maestro TĂ©cnico Mayor - Senior Chief Warrant Officer
*Maestro TĂ©cnico Supervisor - Master Chief Warrant Officer

Understood. Thus:

Sargento TĂ©cnico de Tercera/Maestre de Tercera - Specialist 3rd Class/ Sgt. Maj. or equivalent
Sargento TĂ©cnico de Segunda/Maestre de Segunda - Specialist 2nd Class CSM or equivalent
Sargento TĂ©cnico de Primera/Maestre de Primera - Specialist 1st Class/SMA or equivalent

It's basically the old US style, where you had Sergeants, with command tasks and specialists, who were technicians only.

Also, the Fleet/Force CPO should be the second highest NCO rank in the Navy, and I'm pretty sure there isn't one in Venezuela (also, it's more of an appointmontment than an actual rank).

One more thing: in countries with small(ish) navies it's not unheard of (actually, it's quite commonplace) to have the same rank titles for all forces.

In conclusion, my translation would be as follows:

*Sargento Segundo - Sergeant Second Class
*Sargento Primero - Sergeant First Class
*Sargento Mayor de Tercera - Sergeant Major 3rd Class
*Sargento Mayor de Segunda - Sergeant Major 2nd Class
*Sargento Mayor de Primera - Sergeant Major 1st Class
*Sargento Ayudante - Chief Sergeant Major
*Sargento Supervisor - Senior Chief Sergeant Major

Army Warrant Officers

*Sargento TĂ©cnico de Tercera - Technical Sergeant 3rd Class
*Sargento TĂ©cnico de Segunda - Technical Sergeant 2nd Class
*Sargento TĂ©cnico de Primera - Technical Sergeant 1st Class
*Maestro TĂ©cnico de Tercera - Warrant Officer 3rd Class
*Maestro TĂ©cnico de Segunda - Warrant Officer 2nd Class
*Maestro TĂ©cnico de Primera - Warrant Officer 1st Class
*Maestro TĂ©cnico Mayor - Chief Warrant Officer
*Maestro TĂ©cnico Supervisor - Senior Chief Warrant Officer

Please clerifiy a few Points for me:

1) Are the Venezuelan technician ranks parallell or senior to the NCO ranks?

2) If parallell, like the old US Enlisted Specialistsm why call them Warrant Officers?

3) If senior, like todays US Warrant Officers, why call them Sergeants?

I maintain that one should not mix titles from the NCO corps with titles from the WO corps. Unless of course, that you want to make a literal translation from the original language. Miklos does a pretty good job with that. I would just like the following changes:

*Maestro TĂ©cnico de Tercera - Master Technician 3rd Class
*Maestro TĂ©cnico de Segunda - Master Technician 2nd Class
*Maestro TĂ©cnico de Primera - Master Technician 1st Class
*Maestro TĂ©cnico Mayor - Higher Master Technician
*Maestro TĂ©cnico Supervisor - Supervisory Master Technician

Thanks for that. For the Navy:

*Maestre de Tercera - 3rd Class Master
*Maestre de Segunda - 2nd Class Master
*Maestre de Primera - 1st Class Master
*Maestre TĂ©cnico - Master Technician
*Maestre Auxiliar - Auxiliary Master
*Maestre Principal - Principal Master
*Maestre Mayor - Senior Master
*Maestre Supervisor - Master Supervisor

And my mistakes regarding the Navy thus:

Maestre de Tercera - Command Master Chief Petty Officer
Maestre de Segunda - Fleet/Force Master Chief Petty Officer

Note on the Marines: They DO NOT use army-style ranks. They use navy-style ranks instead.
