Unread postby gghbisa » Mon Apr 26, 2010 9:53 pm

This is an analysis of what ranks were used in what branches in the U.S. Army from the founding of the federal army in 1784 to the end of branch specific enlisted ranks in 1920.

The starting point source for this was the Tables of Organization in the army register. From there pay tables, legislation and the fine books by Colonel Emerson were of great help.

Notes:

1. Only permanent commissions in each branch or department are shown. Officers detailed to a staff assignment are not counted.

2. The rank of First Sergeant was not separated from other Sergeants on the army’s tables of organization until 1861. It first appears in legislation in 1833 so that is when it appears here. First Sergeants were mentioned in the Baron De Steuben’s Drill manual published in 1794. It is possible that the title if not the rank was used as far back as that.

3. Likewise Color Sergeants were not mentioned in the tables until 1901, but according to “Chevrons” by William K. Emerson they began in 1883. That is the date used here.

4. Lance Corporal was never an actual rank created by congress. Therefore it never appears on the tables of organization. It is included here starting in 1891 per “Chevrons”.

5. Information on the rank structure of the new branches added in World War I was had to come by. Therefore some guesswork was involved pending further information.

Have you checked out this book called US Army Grade Insignia since 1776 by Preston Perrenot? I saw a preview and it basically includes the entire rank insignia system of the Army but I don't know how detailed or accurate.

Anyone have this book? He has a whole bunch each covering the Army, Navy, AF, Marines, and Coasties. Are they worth it?

Indian Scouts

There is an Osprey Men at Arms book that shows a "Sergeant Major, Apache Scouts, 1880s" which is ludicrous.

I am glad that your tables confirm that the image is the fruit of a too vivid imagination

I purchased an electronic copy from scribed just to see what the book had to offer. In just briefly scrolling thru the army section I have found some fairly basic errors.

among them:
Two grades of Warrant Officer with brown and gold bars and shoulder straps starting in 1920.

National eagle on Colonel’s shoulder board form 1898 khaki coat.

Gold regimental numbers on 1872 shoulder knots.

Major’s gold oak leaf on 1851 epaulets.

Colonel’s eagle on 1832 shoulder straps matching the color of the border.

Major’s 1832 epaulet in single color.

Major’s 1832 shoulder strap with no leaves.

1832 shoulder strap borders same size for generals and other officers.

1832 epaulets regimental numbers on gold disc.

Green chevrons on 1847 rifle coats.

Chevrons for all branches (including mounted riflemen not formed until 1847) on 1832 dress coat.

Four chevrons for dragoon Sergeant Major on 1832 dress coat.

No 1825 change in chevrons.

CORRECTION

Under artillery Sergeant Major and Stable Sergeant somehow got merged into Stable Sergeant on the list.

It should be:

1808-1898 Sergeant Major
1899-1900 Stable Sergeant
